Magnet Fun

We got a piece of paper, some iron filings and a magnet. We put the magnet under the paper and iron filings.
Look what happened-
We found out that the iron filings stood up when the magnet was directly under the filings.
We also moved the iron filings through the plastic, a book, wood, glass.

We found out that
  • Magnets are objects that produce an area of magnetic force called a magnetic field.
  • Iron filings can be used to show magnetic fields created by magnets (such as in the picture to the left).
  • Magnetism can attract magnetic objects or push them away.
  • Magnets have a magnetic north pole and a magnetic south pole. If the same pole of two magnets are placed near each other they will push away (repel), while if different poles are placed near each other they will pull together (attract).
  • The Earth's core is believed to be a mix (alloy) of iron and nickel, giving the Earth its own magnetic field.
We asked these I wonder questions.

I wonder-
How magnets work?
What magnets can be used for in every day living?
What materials can magnets work through?
Why won't they stick to wood?
How magnets can be used for a white board?

Seth Munro-law

In the holidays I went to the movies two times in one week. One for In-Side-Out. For the other for Jurassic World, you need somebody over 16 to go. It was a bit scary for me because you could hear the bones crack and see blood. It was cooler than In Side Out. My family, except Dad went to the movies. At the start of the holidays our dog got put down. Sadly Sophia cried so much she spewed on the carpet and it left a stain.

Oli's Holiday

In the weekend my cousin Hayley came down to Nelson on the ferry. We met her and Nana at the gym. The first thing me, Hayley and Jack did was to run over to the tall bar and you need to swing on the bar and land in the foam pit. I did that two times and then went on this trampoline and I bounced and landed on a blue mat. Then we went to McDonald's  in Nelson. We played tag. When we got home we helped we helped Dad set up the stretcher.

Holidays By Jada

In the holidays me, my mum, my brother, and my sister went down to Timaru to see  my Nana, while Ryan, Tessa and mum went Ben's 21 first. ( Ben is my cousin. ) Nana took me shopping. We got decorations for my sisters birthday cake and we got gloves, socks, tights, and onesies then we went home. Poppa James has a chiwawa dog named Mini. She was waiting for us at the door. It was night time so I went to bed. I had so much fun. On the way back home we stopped at St James Walkway and played in the snow. t

Down at the Batch By Madeline

In the Holiday's I had a fun time at my Batch. First we had to pick up my big brother's friend Noah. It takes about an hour to get down there. Our batch is in the Marlbourgh Sounds, we stopped at Havelock to have lunch. We all shared chips, fish and a hot dog. When we drove down and me, Harrison and Noah raced the car down. As soon as we got unpacked I went and made my own tree hut. "OUCH'' There was cutty grass every where I got cuts all over my hand! After that I asked Harrison and Noah if they wanted to come out on the bikes down the stoney hills and they said, ''YES'' We have four hills and that's how you get to our batch. Once you get to the top hill you race and then once you get down we take the path down to the beach where it is very steep. Once we got back up I watched Harrison and Noah play pool.

Go Karting By Oliver

This is my cadet cart that I got from Dunedin. It was black and we stickered it up with green deadly stickers and we put a cross on the back. We went to the go cart track and we have to  have numbers on the back and I have chosen 91 because one of my friends has got 90! I wear a helmet that is a scorpion one and it has got air vents on the top and where my mouth is. I also wear a suit that has fluro yellow on it. I have to wear gloves to protect my hands and so I can hold on to the steering wheel better. I am training on the Appleby Cart track. We will be having some competitions next year. I spun out and did a very bad one and I nearly hit the fence, then I ran out of petrol.

Pirates in Brightwater!

On Tuesday we had a visit from Captain Blunderbus! He had a wheelbarrow with a chest in it. The chest was full of many useful things (including a treasure map!). We think we know where the treasure has been buried, so watch this space!!! We are going searching!
