Kupe's wheke disaster

In room 7 we have been writing about a Legend of a man called Kupe. He lived in a hot Polynesian island called Hawiaki. Fishermen on that island usually caught lots of fish but started catching fewer & fewer. Kupe asked a priest to charm their hooks & lines. When they looked into the clear water they saw that there were lots of tiny wheke stealing their fish so they had to do something about it to help the hungry people of Hawiaki. Kupe decided to sail out to sea with his wife, friend and his 5 children to kill the big octopus. They ended up in the Raukawa the (cook strait) where they fought the big wheke. Kupe tricked the Wheke by shouting to his friends & family to throw the water gourds over the side.

Great retell boys. Room 9 are going to be reading some myths and legends next week. It would be great if you could come and tell us some more about the legends you are learning about.

What a great retell. You will have to share it with Room 6.We have retold a story about a taniwha who ate people as they canoed down the river after he got angry when a war party killed Tu Ariki, who was the guy who fed him.
