Lava Lamps


You need:
A clear bottle
                  Oil
                  Water
                  Food colouring
                  A fizzy tablet

What we did: We filled the bottle half full of oil, then we added water. We added a few drops of colouring, then dropped in the fizzy tablet which we broke into pieces. We put the lid on.

This is what happened:

Madeline thought: When you drop in the dissolved tablet, it makes all the dye fly out and bounce back and since the oil is there it is making it slower.

Lucy thought: The oil and the water didn’t mix. The food colouring and the oil mixed and made bubbles and they rose.


Luke thought: The tablet made the water and the oil mix together.

Lily thought: The oil didn’t want to mix with the water molecules and the tablet fizzes.

I Wonder:
Kaelan wondered: Why are there normal and colourful bubbles?
He found out-With a soda bottle, oil, water makes a special ingredient that makes the whole thing bubble, fizz, erupt.

Madeline wondered: Why oil sits right on top of the water?
She found out- The reason why oil floats on water is because water and oil have different densities.

Jada wondered: Could you use dish liquid instead of oil?

Hannah wondered: How long will it last?

Breanna wondered: What kind of tablets can you use?


Lily and Cody wondered: What would happen if you put salt in the water?

Ben found out: Water is more dense than oil.

Erin wondered: What would happen if we put more fizzy tablets in?

How Clouds Hold Water

You need-
coloured water
a clear jar with water in it
shaving foam
an eyedropper.

We put the shaving foam on top of the water in the jar and then we dropped the coloured water on top of the shaving cream. The coloured water slowly went through the 'cloud' and it rained!

We found out that when the cloud gets too heavy and it can't hold the water anymore it rains.

We also found out about the Water Cycle- Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation and then it rains!

I wonder-
Some children asked-

What other kinds of materials could we use rather than shaving cream.

What happens in the clouds to make hail, sleet or snow.

Can we do an experiment showing water going up.

Tornado in a Bottle

We filled a bottle three quarters full of water, added some drops of dish washing liquid, and some glitter. We spun the bottle in circular movements.
Look what happened-


   



We turned the bottle in circular movements and the water moved like a mini tornado. It spun faster and tighter at the bottom. The glitter showed us which way the water spun. The spinning water made a water vortex.

We found out that vortexes can be found in tornadoes, hurricanes and waterspouts.

We asked these I wonder questions. 

I wonder-
What causes a tornado?
Kaelan found out that when two air masses meet and the lower one contains warm humid air and the higher one contains cool dry air, a tornado forms.

What way does a tornado spin?
Madeline, Lily and Nikita found out it depends which hemisphere you are in. It usually turns counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere .

Why is in the dish washing liquid put in the bottle?.

Why does it spin faster at the bottom?


How do you know when a tornado will hit?

Magnet Fun

We got a piece of paper, some iron filings and a magnet. We put the magnet under the paper and iron filings.
Look what happened-
We found out that the iron filings stood up when the magnet was directly under the filings.
We also moved the iron filings through the plastic, a book, wood, glass.

We found out that
  • Magnets are objects that produce an area of magnetic force called a magnetic field.
  • Iron filings can be used to show magnetic fields created by magnets (such as in the picture to the left).
  • Magnetism can attract magnetic objects or push them away.
  • Magnets have a magnetic north pole and a magnetic south pole. If the same pole of two magnets are placed near each other they will push away (repel), while if different poles are placed near each other they will pull together (attract).
  • The Earth's core is believed to be a mix (alloy) of iron and nickel, giving the Earth its own magnetic field.
